Marcel van Hoef (1967 NL)

Marcel van Hoef’s paintings reflect on how we as humans experience time and space. Immaterial aspects of visual reality such as light, shadow and reflections have been the common thread in his work since his graduation in 1989.

Recent work consists of two different thematic series that he works on simultaneously. On the one hand, he paints spatial landscapes in a realistic style where, as a viewer, you see part of a garden or forest, and it seems as if you can step right into the painting. In addition, he develops a second important line in his work with water reflections as a source of inspiration. The tangible reality of water and an immaterial reflection of the world in the water’s surface, is depicted by Marcel van Hoef in refined painted images in which time seems solidified.

Marcel van Hoef paints with egg tempera. He chooses this old technique because of its crisp colors and velvety matte paint surface. He paints in numerous thin and transparent layers on linen or panel, which makes the skin of paint have an enormous spatial effect when viewed up close.
