A rare spherical Art Deco vase made by the French glass manufacturer Schneider. The vase is crafted from very thick semi-crystal pressed glass featuring highly characteristic Art Deco motifs. By frosting the flat surfaces and leaving the sloped surfaces clear, a deep relief effect is achieved.
The vase is signed “SCHNEIDER” on one of its facets. At the base of the vase, the word “France” appears in relief, which could indicate that this vase was intended for export.
Height: 25 cm – Diameter: 22 cm
Verrerie Schneider was a very well-known French glass factory, founded in 1913 by the brothers Charles and Ernest Schneider. The factory played a leading role in the transition from the Art Nouveau to the Art Deco style. In addition to designs featuring bold color contrasts, Schneider also created a limited number of objects in pressed glass.
At its peak, the factory in Épinay-sur-Seine employed some 500 glassblowers and artists. After the stock market crash of 1929, Schneider’s exports to the United States collapsed completely. This loss of export revenue, combined with a protracted and costly lawsuit for plagiarism against competitor David Guéron (“Degué”), led to the company’s bankruptcy in 1939.
