Pair of large Art Deco bookends “Squirrels” in white crackle ceramic.

These Art Deco bookends were designed by Lejan, one of the most famous French Art Deco animal artists. Lejan worked for various French ceramic manufacturers, including Orchies.

Both bookends are signed “Lejan” on one corner of the base. At the bottom of each bookend is ‘Orchies’, the manufacturer’s stamp, with a drawing of a windmill above it. This refers to ‘Moulin des Loups’, the mark used after the 1923 merger of the ceramic manufacturers of Orchies and Hamage.

The bookends are in excellent vintage condition.
