Yvan THEYS
1936 – 2005
Yvan THEYS (Marke 1936) studied at Saint-Lucas in Tournai, where his contacts included Dodeigne. In 1959 he became a teacher there himself. Yvan THEYS is a painter, sculptor, draughtsman and graphic artist. After an abstract initial period, he seeks inspiration from the great masters of art history. His work is influenced by the Cobra. In the early 1960s, together with Raveel and other friends-artists, he develops a new vision of the relationship between abstraction and figuration and thus lies at the basis of the New Figuration. In his later pictoral language, one sees how the human figures become more and more twisted and fragmented while the psychic charge is increasingly explicit. Yvan THEYS acquired a great deal of international fame. Especially in the Netherlands his oeuvre is known and spread. He died on July 01, 2005.
